Rajabu Mubulwa and his wife Rachel Ekyemba opened their GoDoog Kitchen restaurant in September 2021. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the couple embarked on a personal and professional project: to welcome the community in a family restaurant with a warm and comforting atmosphere.
GoDoog Kitchen restaurant opened in September 2021. “At first, it was a bit difficult, especially with the pandemic,” says the owner. But we persisted. Today, I see that things are improving little by little. It makes us happy.”
Rajabu Mubulwa and Rachel Ekyemba, along with their employee, prepare fast food of all kinds: paninis, fried fish, burgers, lasagna, skewers and pizzas.
Pizzas are precisely what Rajabu Mubulwa prefers to cook. “I really like pizza, and that’s what I’d like to develop further,” he told. I’m always trying to figure out how I can make an even better pizza.”
In a few months, the restaurateur has already learned a lot, especially through dialogue. “I learned by talking with people, by listening to their feedback. That’s how I improved my pizzas. I asked someone to come and teach me how to improve. Now we make pizzas that people love. “
Apart from the culinary satisfaction of their customers, it is equally important to Rajabu Mubulwa and his wife that they feel at home in their restaurant. Hence GoDoog Kitchen’s slogan: From our hearts to your home. “We created a warm way to welcome people to our restaurant, with love. It is important to give great respect to all our customers. We want to create a family atmosphere.”
And why open a restaurant? There is a lot of reflection behind this choice. “When I arrived here in Canada, I asked myself: What can I do to contribute to the community?
“I started thinking about what I could bring,” recalls Rajabu Mubulwa. Producing healthy meals for everyone busy with their work and don’t have time to prepare their meals at home, that’s what I could do. I felt that ambition in me and I was really convinced that we could succeed.”
Rajabu Mubulwa had been thinking about starting his business for a long time. In his country of origin, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he had multiplied various professional experiences with the idea of perfecting his project. “Some of the companies I worked in were related to catering and restaurants,” says Rajabu Mubulwa. I thought that I could easily start my own restaurant.”
In 2018, the passionate entrepreneur arrived in Canada with his wife, Rachel Ekyemba, and their children. It is with strong determination that Rajabu Mubulwa then embarked on the preparation of this great project. “It wasn’t easy because I was a newcomer and I didn’t know how things work here. But I really wanted to start my business. I decided to take that risk and get started. “
Obviously, when you arrive in a completely different country, you have to adapt. “Even though I had my project in mind, I didn’t know where to start,” says Rajabu Mubulwa. I needed to save money to start with. I did several things, such as planting trees in Quebec. Then I was taught how to better manage my finances, and save money. It helped me a lot. “
“In my opinion, to be a good entrepreneur, you need to have an open heart and a good spirit of understanding,” concludes Rajabu Mubulwa. I have different customers and I have to adapt accordingly, to understand their different needs. Even if I can’t satisfy everyone at 100%, I do my best.”
GoDoog Kitchen offers the option of eating on-site in the restaurant, ordering online or by phone to benefit from a free delivery service. For now, a maximum of ten people can eat inside the restaurant.
This summer, however, GoDoog Kitchen will open an outdoor terrace, which will accommodate about forty people.
For the new restaurant owner, this is really the beginning of a great adventure for which he has been preparing all his life. “My father taught me how to create my job and work for myself, to become someone. I have entrepreneurship in me. In the future, I hope to expand our restaurant and open other branches.”
