Downtown Winnipeg has a new hair salon: Hair by DG. Its owner, Decheznous Mingwikwi, has a long and extensive experience to offer to his customers in several languages.
Of Congolese origin, Decheznous Mingwikwi arrived in Manitoba in 2019 with the professional dream of opening his hair salon. Now he’s the owner of Hair by DG, a hair salon for men and women in the heart of Winnipeg.
Decheznous Mingwikwi was no stranger to entrepreneurship or hairdressing when he arrived in Canada. “I have entrepreneurial uncles who have a hair salon in Tanzania. It was with them that I began to learn about hairdressing. They are great hairdressers there. They are the ones who made me want to become an entrepreneur myself and open my own hair salon. ”
Subsequently, he decided to complete this practical training received from his uncles with theoretical courses and an official hairdressing diploma. So, he went to study at a hairdressing college in South Africa, and he also trained in Canada to qualify as a hairdresser. “To be able to become a true professional and have a career in hairdressing, it was important that I had qualifications,” he explains.
Decheznous Mingwikwi has been a hairdresser in Tanzania, South Africa, but also in Mozambique. He had already accumulated 13 years of experience before emigrating to Canada, his fourth country of practice.
“That’s one of my biggest advantages,” he says. I have extensive experience and expertise in dealing with hair of different types, including African hair. I have confidence in my work, in my experience. I know what I’m doing! ”

Hair by DG is happy to care for all hair types, men and women. The salon also sells hair extensions and products for all hair types. “I can really do anything people want,” says the owner, who employs three other people to help him style hair.
Hair by DG has five seats and offers bilingual service in English and French and several African languages.
Just two months after opening his hair salon, Decheznous Mingwikwi considers himself lucky: “I started with a good pace,” he says. I already have a good number of customers, and since there is a lot of traffic where I have settled, I also often receive new customers. ”
This is explained by the fact that the professional hairdresser did not wait to have his own salon to get back into hairdressing in Canada. He first worked as an employee in a Winnipeg hair salon and then rented a mirror from a barbershop. So, he had time to build a clientele, which then followed him to his new salon.
“Thanks to my customers, I was able to open Hair by DG,” says Decheznous Mingwikwi, grateful. They always encouraged and followed me, and now they send me new clients! They are happy to see me progress professionally. ”
Another key element of the Congolese-born hairdresser’s professional progression in Manitoba was CDEM.
“Becoming an entrepreneur in Canada wasn’t easy,” says Decheznous Mingwikwi. First, you had to collect a lot of documents to be qualified. Then, I had to do a lot of work.
“It took a lot of discipline and faith, but I was very determined to do it, and Joel Lemoine from CDEM helped me a lot with the paperwork. He advised me very well on how and where to pick up the right documents for my business.”
And now? “My next step is to grow my customer base by advertising, and then one day, I dream of being able to open another salon. To serve more customers, but also to train more new hairdressers. ”
Hair by DG is located at 259 Vaughan Street. Preferably by appointment.
