Kayla Normandeau

How old are you?

I am 17 years old.

Where do you live?

I live in Winnipeg.

Can you describe your company?

I make custom cakes and desserts for the people of Winnipeg and the surrounding area. I enjoy working with my clients to bring their vision to life. It’s always exciting to have new perspectives and ideas to prepare personalized creations.

Who is your target audience?

My target clientele reaches everyone who loves the dessert. However, I find that most of the people who order from me are women between the ages of 20 and 70.

How did the idea for your company come about?

I made an Easter cake for a family reunion. Everyone was really impressed; it was the first cake I had ever made. My grandmother was so impressed that she sent the picture to her sisters. A week later, the daughter of one of the sisters to my grandmother contacted me to see if I was interested in making a party cake for her. I agreed, and since then I haven’t stopped making custom cakes!

What tools do you use most in your business?

I use several tools in the kitchen and other tools for marketing too. In the kitchen, I use spatulas, a bench scraper, sockets, socket pockets, my kitchen-Aid, my parents’ stove, measuring cups, an electric scale, and many others. For the marketing side, I use my computer  to work on my website (it is not live yet). I also use my Canon camera to take pictures of my products. Mon phone is also a tool to respond to customers and work on my Instagram account.

Which local businesses inspire you?

Jenna Rae Cakes for sure! (I just finished a 2-week internship there!)

Do you plan to continue your studies at university? If so, in what area?

Yes! Certainly. Now I am studying at ATC for “Baking and Pastry Arts”. Once at university, I will choose business to better equip myself to start a business.
